DESCRIPTION:ACM-W OCWiC welcomes Dr. Alaina Phillips for Integrating Experiences: Working in Academia and Industry\, December 1\, Noon\, Zoom. Part of the OCWiC speaker series. \nSome students experience difficulties breaking into UX and UX research. During this session\, Dr. Phillips will highlight some of the challenges students face. She will discuss tips on overcoming those issues and how to turn them into strengths\, towards their new journeys in UX. \nAlaina is a cognitive psychologist who transitioned into the field of UX in 2015. She has a well-established background in human behavior and her theoretical orientation is grounded in Gestalt psychology and cognitive aging. Her research projects have centered around visual processing and attention\, cognitive aging\, and universal design. Her publications include her master’s thesis work on transit maps in the Encyclopedia of Human Behavior: Environmental Cognition (See Sterns & Sterns) and her dissertation work “Global Precedence & Aging: Evidence of Parallel Processing” which explores visual attention and aging. Currently\, She is a Sr. UX Researcher at PPG. Additionally\, she teaches graduate studies for New York University Steinhardt in the Department of Applied Psychology. \nUse a Google form to register and get the online meeting link.

SUMMARY:Handbook of Augmented Reality Training Design Principles
DESCRIPTION:The Southern Ohio HFES chapter hosts Laura Militello and Christen Sushereba of Applied Decision Science. They will present their work about training using augmented reality. \n\n\n\nin this talk\, Laura and Christen will present a set of design principles for creating recognition skills training using augmented reality (AR). AR is a promising technology for training perceptual skills\, but published studies have been mixed regarding its practical effectiveness in creating meaningful training experiences. Together with their coauthor\, Dr. Sowmya Ramachandran\, Ms. Militello and Ms. Sushereba created a set of 11 training design principles for meaningful integration of AR technology into perceptual and recognition skills training. These principles are derived from findings in various domains including Naturalistic Decision Making\, expertise\, sensemaking\, instructional systems design\, education\, and intelligent tutoring. Ms. Sushereba will provide demonstrations of sample AR technologies \n\n\n\nThis event will be recorded and will take place both in person and virtually (Google Meet). In person attendees should arrive at the Wright Brothers Institute at 5000 Springfield Street\, Riverside\, OH 45431 prior to noon.
